I’m sure that by now you’ve heard of Google’s new logo announcement that took place a couple of days ago, September 1, 2015. Have you seen it? Well, there’s definitely more to it than meets the eye! They’re able to maintain what they represent as a company as well as show that they are adapting with today’s fast changing technology and consumers.
Sure, they’ve changed many times over their 17 year run, but each change has significant meaning to it. These changes signify their ability to evolve and conform to today’s demands.
The Changes
If you take a look at the logo, one of the most obvious changes is the change in typography, previously it was in a “Serif” type face, it is now in what is called “Product Sans.” This type of typography is one most commonly found in children’s books. When you think of children’s books you think of kids; happy and playful kids. Suddenly, you realize that it is a friendly and approachable logo. It’s clean and simple, yet very significant.
They have also announced the retirement of the old “g” and replaced it with a capital “G” that has all 4 colors intertwined within it. Which allows for higher brand recognition.
Similarities
What they have kept the same is the color scheme; blue, red, yellow and green. The new logo does display the colors in a slightly lighter fashion, but the color coordination remained the same. Also, they maintained their slanted “e” at the end.
The Overall Picture
Google created this new logo to allow themselves to adapt to the way that consumers are using their products. We not only use our desktops and laptops to make purchases, conduct research, socialize, anymore, but we also use cell phones, iPad’s, notebooks, our cars, and wristwatches, which is why Google created their new logo. The change allows for them to not only still be Google, but to also be Google wherever and however you’re utilizing it. The new colorful “G” is able to conform to any size so that it is still distinguishable anywhere. They’ve also added the color scheme to their google microphone and created 4 little colorful dots to symbolize Google. “We think we’ve taken the best of Google (simple, uncluttered, colorful, friendly), and recast it not just for the Google of today, but for the Google of the future.” Said Tamar Yehoshua, VP, Product Management & Bobby Nath, Director of User Experience.
